Natural Hair: Hydration vs. Moisture

NATURAL HAIR: HYDRATION VS. MOISTURE

Over my 10 year natural hair journey I have realized that it's a lifestyle. When you go natural you are reverting back to your most purest form. You are discovering your true identity and essence. When you go natural, you start caring about what touches your crown and only wanting high quality ingredients in your haircare.

I know for me I wanted to know everything about natural hair and how I can make it easier. I'm not gonna lie to you our hair is a task. But, knowledge is power! Now that I know the transformation it made in my life, I want to empower brown girls to embrace the kinks, coils, curls, & locs.

For the longest I didn't understand the difference between hydration and moisture. Although they go hand-in-hand in keeping our hair healthy, they have different roles.

So what is the difference between Hydration VS. Moisture?

Hydration:

Hydrating your hair refers to the hairs ability to absorb moisture and penetrate the hair strand. The amount of water in the hair strands determines the level of hydration.

▶️ TIP: Using water and/or shampoo will automatically open your hair cuticle to allow conditioner to "close" the cuticle minimizing breakage. Adding heat allows more conditioner to stick to the surface of your hair strands prolonging moisture in your crown

Moisture:

Moisturizing your hair refers to locking in the water that is already present on the hair strand. Moisturizers help retain the water level within the hair strands

▶️ TIP: Once the hair cuticle is closed, use products that will seal the water in the hair shaft. Check out our herb infused sealing oil.

✅ Hydration is the process of applying water/humectant to the hair to penetrate the inner hair strand. (ex. leave in conditioner)

✅ Moisture is the process of locking water/humectants or “hydration”into the hair shaft. Moisturizers create a protective barrier/seal to prevent water loss. (ex. herb infused sealing oil)
  • What is a Humectant? Humectants carry and attract water.

    1. Water
    2. Glycerin
    3. Hyaluronic Acid
    4. Aloe Vera
    5. Honey
  • What is an Anti-humectant? Seals in moisture.

      1. Oil (Avocado, Olive, Coconut etc.)
      2. Shea Butter
      3. Beeswax
      4. Silicones
      5. Plant Triglycerides
      6. Grease

In conclusion, hydration is about moisture absorption. Moisture is all about reducing breakage and moisture retention. They are not the same thing ! But,
YOU NEED BOTH to maintain healthy natural/textured hair.
