How To Remove Braids Without Damage!

Tips on Taking Out Protective Styles Safely!

Summer is fast approaching! With summer vacation comes more protective hairstyles which are suppose to save us time and give our hair a needed break.

There is definitely a takedown technique that will minimize any breakage.
Here are 6 tips to remove a protective style the safest ways:

1️⃣ Spray hair with water 💦 and/or a leave-in mixture. This provides slip and loosens the braids or twists.
Leave in Mix Recipe: (Use these measurements or eyeball mixture)
2️⃣ Cut the braids approx. 2 inches from your ends. This minimizes the time to remove the #hairstyle.
3️⃣ Loosen the braid/twist. Unravel the braid with the tip of the rattail comb, starting at the bottom and going all the way up. You can also just use your fingers!

4️⃣ Detangle Buildup at your roots. Apply a small amount of your favorite detangling cream or the leave-in mixture to the roots and slowly work it through that fragile area. Have patience and take your time in this step.

5️⃣ Start Your #washdayroutine. Use a Pre-poo, my favorite being African Pride . It will help you detangle and add moisture to your hair. We also suggest completing a deep conditioning treatment after the clarifying shampoo and a moisturizing conditioner, our product suggestion, TGIN Miracle Repairx Deep Hydrating Hair Mask.

6️⃣ Style as desired in a low manipulation #naturalhairstyle. What do I mean?
Here are a Few Examples:
  • Buns/High Puff
  • Low Ponytails
  • Mini Twists (my fav!)
  • Cornrows
  • Bantu Knots
  • Styles that tuck in your ends. (updos)
How do you care for your hair after wearing a protective style?
